DIY Credit Repair Tools: What to Use If You Do It Yourself
You don't need to hire anyone to dispute credit report errors. Here are the tools that make doing it yourself faster and more organized.
Disclosure: 90 Day Credit Experts and DIY Credit are affiliated companies.
We're a credit repair company, so you might expect us to tell you not to try this at home. But the truth is, you have every right to dispute errors on your credit reports yourself, for free. If you're organized and have the time, the right tools make it very doable.
Here's what we'd use if we were doing it ourselves.
1. AnnualCreditReport.com for your reports
AnnualCreditReport.com is the only official source for free credit reports from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, and reports are available weekly. Start here. Every dispute begins with knowing exactly what's on all three reports.
Best for: getting the full reports. Limitations: no score, no tracking, and the three reports are separate documents you have to compare yourself.
2. The credit bureaus' own dispute portals
Equifax, Experian and TransUnion each let you file disputes online. It's free and fast for simple, clear-cut errors.
Best for: one or two obvious errors. Limitations: you dispute with each bureau separately, space to explain is limited, and you won't have the paper trail that a mailed letter gives you.
3. DIY Credit for organizing disputes and drafting letters
If you have several items across three bureaus, the hard part isn't writing one letter. It's keeping everything organized. DIY Credit is credit repair software built for people who want to work their own file. It brings your three-bureau reports into one view, lets you mark the items you believe are inaccurate (nothing is picked for you), and uses AI to draft a dispute letter for each item and bureau in plain language. You review and edit every line, then print, sign and mail it yourself.
It also tracks what you've sent and shows what changed when a newer report comes in, which is the part most people lose track of when they do it by hand.
Best for: people with multiple items who want structure without paying a monthly repair fee. Cost: the DIY Credit tools are free; it uses a SmartCredit® credit monitoring membership for your reports, which is a separate charge (currently $1 for 7 days, then $34.95 a month). Check their site for current pricing.
4. The CFPB for when a dispute goes nowhere
If a bureau or creditor won't fix information you can prove is wrong, you can submit a complaint to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Companies generally respond to CFPB complaints within 15 days.
5. IdentityTheft.gov for fraudulent accounts
If accounts on your report aren't yours because of identity theft, IdentityTheft.gov creates the official FTC Identity Theft Report you need to have those accounts blocked. Read our identity theft guide for the full process.
Whatever tool you use
- Only dispute information you believe is inaccurate, incomplete or unverifiable.
- Keep copies of every letter and document.
- Mail important disputes by certified mail.
- Track the 30-day investigation window for each dispute.
When it makes sense to hire help instead
